What we put online is public, now and forever. A little leg work and anyone can track you down with the data that you post online.
The Ad Council has two spots (see below) that try to illustrate this points for young people. I consider these eye opening spots and a good illustration of how information spreads online.
I work in the online medium. It's part of my job to test the technology and engage in the conversation. I consider my online presence to be part of my CV, in fact it was mentioned in my job interview by my current employer. The difference is that my experience and knowledge allow me to evaluate the content I am posting online and to make careful decisions on what information to post.
As parents, educators and thought leaders we need to help our young people understand the risks while we teach them about the tools available to them as they grow in this current information society.
